Patterned Tiles from Original Style – Odyssey, Quatrefoil

The UK tile company, Original Style, has a beautiful line of unglazed, patterned ceramic tiles called Odyssey. We are considering two of these patterns, Romanesque and Quatrefoil, for the floor of a butler pantry and rear entry hall in a client’s historic Victorian house. While our design for the interior is not at all traditional, I like the idea of giving a nod to the patterns that might have been in the house originally–the sort of encaustic tile you see in the photograph below.

Although the historical reference made by the new tiles is clear, the patterns and colors under consideration for this project have a contemporary, up-to-date style.  The sharp resolution of the screen-printed patterns on a smooth ceramic body contributes to this modern look.

In this particular house, the pattern on the floor combined with dark painted wood on the adjacent stair and hints of brass in the lighting and hardware provide a dramatic visual interlude as one passes from the back door to the kitchen, a meaningful, gracious transition into areas of the house with a more contemporary feel.

Original Style offers numerous designs with a color palette is a refined, up-to-date one suitable for any style interior where a floor pattern is desired. The pattern can be run wall to wall; border tiles can be used on the perimeter; or the patterned tiles can float within a field of plain to create the look of a rug.

Original Style is a UK line handled by many tile distributors (or “stockists” as the Brits say) in the United States. Here in New Orleans you can see this product information at Stafford Tile & Stone.
